Kirkby Lonsdale is a market town in the south east corner of South Lakeland and is on the border with Lancashire and Yorkshire. It is one of the few settlements mentioned in the Doomsday Book from Cumbria and described as Cherchibi (village with a church).

The town developed as a crossing point of the river where a number of drovers and packhorse routes converged. The town was granted its market charter in 1227 and weekly markets grew with livestock and other wares attracting people from around. By the early nineteenth century the market had begun to get congested and so it was moved to its current location in the Market Square where it remains to this day.

The town today is thriving with the Main Street and Market Street enjoying a mix of independent retailers with their shops in elegant Georgian buildings and mixed with hotels and public houses. It has a wide range of amenities and facilities enjoying a supermarket, a recently built health centre, dentists and pharmacy. The local schools are well regarded with St Marys being the primary School and Queen Elizabeth School being the secondary school. There are many different clubs and societies with rugby cricket hockey and football all having teams. Kirkby enjoys a lovely setting with the River Lune only a short walk away from the town centre and with Devils Bridge an attraction.

The A65 is nearby and the M6 only 5 miles away so Kirkby Lonsdale is a popular visitor destination and well located for those that want a family life outside cities but who are prepared to travel to work.

Kirkby helps serve the wider community with a number of popular villages nearby including Barbon and Casterton to the north, Whittington, Arkholme, Tunstall and Melling to the south and Hutton Roof to the west.

Ingleton

Ingleton lies on the edge of the Yorkshire dales, Craven district of North Yorkshire, with easy access on the A65 to Kirkby Lonsdale, Kendal & the M6 or Settle & Skipton in the other direction. Famous for Ingleborough, which stands at 2373 feet, the waterfalls trail and White Scar Caves, attracting keen walkers whilst the village itself has several cafes, pubs and guest houses.

Casterton

Casterton is a small village close to Kirkby Lonsdale, situated approximately 5 miles from junction 36 M6. It is home of the highly regarded independent preparatory school for Sedbergh School. The village also features a 9 hole golf course and 18th Century Inn.

Sedbergh

Sedbergh is England’s book town; it is a small town in Cumbria lying about 10 miles east of Kendal and about 10 miles north of Kirkby Lonsdale. It has a thriving main street of shops, ancient buildings, with the Howgill Fells providing a stunning backdrop. Sedbergh has a famous independent co-educational boarding school founded in 1525.

Burrow, Tunstall, Melling & Wray – Lune Valley Villages

The villages down the Lune Valley remain small, quaint and traditional but offer good links to Kirkby Lonsdale or Lancaster in the other direction. The Lunesdale Arms at Tunstall or the award-winning Highwayman Inn at Burrow are popular pub-style restaurants and the village of Wray holds a scarecrow festival each May.
